Specialized Treatment Tracks

Substance Abuse

90% of the youth at Turning Point are dealing with substance abuse issues. Each of our youth are placed in the appropriate treatment track to suit their individual needs. All of our substance abuse tracks utilize Motivational Interviewing and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

Education and Prevention Track

In this track, youth attend one drug and alcohol education group per week lead by a Certified Addiction Counselor (Level II or III).  This group focuses primarily on education, biological affects of drug and alcohol use on the body, peer pressure, etc.  Youth in this track are provided exposure to recovery groups and educated on the use of those support groups.

Intervention and Treatment Track

Youth in this track attend one drug and alcohol education group a week described above.  In addition they attend one treatment focused drug and alcohol group a week led by a Certified Addiction Counselor (Level II or III).  This group is focused on treatment interventions and recovery.  Youth in this track also choose a recovery program and are assisted individually with work on that program.  For example, if they choose Alcoholics Anonymous, they begin a 12-step program, get a sponsor and work individually with their therapist on a recovery plan.

The evidence-based practice curriculum utilized in this track is Pathways to Self-Discovery and Change. Pathways was developed to respond to the need for a developmentally appropriate model designed to address substance abuse, mental disorder and/or criminal conduct.  Pathways is now recognized as the standard of care for juvenile substance abusing offenders by the Colorado Division of Behavioral Health.

Pathways is an outcomes based program for delivering cognitive restructuring and social skills training to adolescent substance abusing offenders.

Pathways is divided into three phases: Challenge to Change (trust building, open sharing, thoughts and relation to substance abuse and criminal activity, triggers); Commitment to Change (improve communication, play fair, avoid trouble, develop sense of responsibility and concern for others, change negative thinking, handle anger, guilt and depression); Ownership for Change (apply knowledge into own life, overcome prejudice, understand intimacy, problem solving, decision making, lifestyle balance, build family and community support, healthy leisure).

Other options for clients include:

SMART Recovery - Youth are provided information about SMART Recovery.  This is a cognitively-based recovery program that focuses on abstinence from drug use and enhancing quality of life. This is used as an alternative to the 12 step programs.

Wellbriety - Daughters of Tradition and Sons of Tradition are two Wellbriety Movement prevention programs aimed at Native American Youth. Both programs reinforce the cultural grounding that is part of their own traditions, teach safe and well conduct, and allow young people to stay clear of gangs, drugs, and other dangerous behavior.

Relapse Prevention

All clients are required to complete a relapse prevention plan before they are permitted to leave Turning Point programs.  This is done on an individual basis and the client receives assistance from his/her treatment team.

Meth Track

The prevalence of Methamphetamine abuse among our clients has motivated Turning Point to develop a specific "Meth Track" within the Substance Abuse Program.

When meth is used over and over again, the drug actually changes brain chemistry, destroying the wiring in the brain's pleasure centers making it increasingly impossible to experience any pleasure at all. Although studies have shown that these tissues can regrow over time, the process can take years, and the repair may never be complete including impairment in memory, judgment and motor coordination, similar to symptons seen in individuals suffering from Parkinson's Disease.
In light of the available information, Turning Point has designed the Meth Treatment Program to meet this set of specialized needs.

Turning Point offers the following interventions in the Meth Track Program:

  • dietary supplements specific to supporting and rebuilding brain function, including amino acides, omega-3 fish oils and vitamins
  • education that is specific to the physical, psychological, neurological and social impacts of meth use and recovery
  • focused relapse prevention activities
  • education and therapeutic interventions to assist clients in building a healthy body image that may be impacted by the weight gain that often follows abstinence from meth
  • dental care when needed

Transition/Independent Living

Turning Point’s Transition services emphasize making the transition to independent living.
Here clients practice skills necessary to achieve self-sufficiency by obtaining jobs and/or
completing a high school Diploma or GED.

Transition services are integrated into both our Residential Treatment and Community Centered Services programs. Once on their own, youth continue to receive dedicated support from
Turning Point Staff and the recovery community as they work to maintain sobriety.
