When Kim and Gary Brooksmith tragically lost their beloved son Benjamin last January, they immediately and understandably began to question what they could have done to help Ben to overcome his addictions and to ultimately live a full life.
The Brooksmiths’ search eventually led them to Turning Point Center for Youth and Family Development. They were drawn to the agency mainly because of its work with substance abuse treatment and prevention. Turning Point’s treatment approach is multifaceted – first and foremost, the clinical teams address behavioral health and substance abuse histories, they then decide on the course of treatment and level of therapy warranted, and ultimately, youth are given the opportunity to Turn their Lives Around.
Turning Point was so moved by the Brooksmiths’ desire to help other young people and their families. The agency has set up a special fund in Memory of Benjamin Scott Brooksmith. The fund supports substance abuse treatment and prevention at Turning Point.
The Ben Brooksmith project raises funds support Turning Point’s Substance Abuse Treatment and Prevention services.
Proceeds help to finance Pathways to Self Discovery & Change curriculum books, transportation to and from community AA/NA meetings, Certified Addiction Counselor salaries and individual therapy sessions for each individual youth in our care.
The program fills the financial gap between what it costs to run this program and what state agencies and insurance companies are willing to pay to subsidize these essential services.
We like this project because it impacts youth across our continuum of services. 90% of the youth at Turning Point struggle with substance abuse issues. The youth are in our residential treatment programs and our day treatment programs. Many of these youth are clients in our in-home therapies programs and others are involved in our coaching/mentoring programs.
Every child at Turning Point, and every family at Turning Point benefits immensely from the Benjamin Brooksmith Project.
Substance Abuse Treatment, Education, and Prevention helps to break the cycle of substance abuse, gets kids off drugs and keeps kids off drugs. The program offers kids struggling with drugs and alcohol abuse other options for self care so that they discontinue the use of illegal substances for self-medication.
This program teaches kids about sobriety and pairs them with AA/NA mentors in the community as they continue on the road to recovery and sobriety.
